Business demand for system changes, originating from multiple countries, were being managed in emails and spreadsheets. Making it difficult to align business requests with technology changes. There were limited designs describing the future solutions and is was time consuming governing investments across a large portfolio.

Opportunity

There was an opportunity to connect demand with supply and provide transparency over business requests as they progressed through an agile portfolio pipeline. This would realise improving tracking (monthly and quarterly), through introducing new disciplines, structures and tooling. Including improved governance, compliance and security considerations.

Hypotheses

Is it possible to create an agile portfolio that connects demand across multiple countries and connects it to supply, across a large complex portfolio?
Is it possible to use a common set of tools to connect the Business with Technology?
Is it possible to implement continuous change and operational improvements every 2 weeks in order to rollout a new Agile portfolio pipeline, within 12 months?

The solution

Designing and implementing a pipeline method consisting of 4 phases, with a governance forum responsible for transition items across each phase. Introducing common toolsets across portfolio planning & solution delivery. Just enough data was captured to satisfy portfolio tracking & reporting, and the approach to implementation was small Improvements made continuously every 2 weeks for 8 months. Including 200 people enabled through method & tool training, and ongoing coaching that focused on continuous improvements.
